Ferry Services

The M/V Tustumena serves communities along the Aleutian Chain and Kodiak Island as part of the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS). Affectionately known as the “Trusty Tusty,” the vessel arrives in King Cove once month from June through September, providing essential passenger and freight service to this remote region.

Built in 1964 in Wisconsin, the 296-foot Tustumena is one of only two ocean-class vessels in the AMHS fleet. Its robust design allows it to safely navigate the challenging, open waters of the Aleutian Chain. Due to its size and capabilities, it remains the only AMHS vessel able to serve all 13 ports of call between Homer and Unalaska / Dutch Harbor.

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities is currently designing a modern replacement for the aging Tustumena, which has served Alaskan communities for over 50 years.

To learn more about the M/V Tustumena, view schedules, explore routes, or make reservations, visit the Alaska Marine Highway System website: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.shtml.

As the M/V Tustumena gets older, the state is planning ahead for her retirement and replacement with a vessel that provides greater capacity, modernized safety features, increased seaworthiness, and enhanced passenger comfort.
